While teaching third grade, I was fortunate to participate in the pilot Being A Writer program. This program consists of 4 lessons per week, each lesson starting with an anchor text which is read aloud, discussed as a group or in partners. Students are then allowed to write for a sustained period of time. This time starts at 10 minutes and slowly builds to 30 minutes.
Writing Folders
Students kept Writing folders where they placed completed pieces. Students had the opportunity to share their work from this folder every few weeks during "Author's Chair."
Winter Break Stories
After we returned from Winter Break, the students wrote stories about their experiences during the break. They were excited when I found stationary to match the season.
